In a significant move to strengthen the implementation of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 (PoSH Act), the Government of India has announced mandatory registration of all organisations on the SHeBox portal.
What is SHe-Box?
SHe-Box (Sexual Harassment Electronic Box) is an online platform by the Ministry of Women and Child Development where women, both in the public or private sector, can file complaints related to workplace sexual harassment. It also allows organisations to demonstrate their commitment to compliance under the PoSH Act.
What’s New?
As of early 2024, SHe-Box registration has been made mandatory for all organisations - public and private, regardless of size or number of employees.
This step aims to:
Ensure better monitoring of Internal Committees (ICs)
Improve accountability across workplaces
Offer a transparent redressal mechanism for survivors
State-Level Notifications & Deadlines
Several states have already issued circulars to reinforce the central directive. Here are a few key highlights:
Coimbatore: The District Collector, C. Dinesh Kumar has warned workplaces against non-constitution of the Internal Committee for inquiry into the complaints of workplace sexual harassment.
Maharashtra: The State Labour Department has set a deadline and warned that non-compliance will attract penalties under the PoSH Act. Read announcement here.
Karnataka: State Governments are conducting awareness drives and have instructed district-level officers to monitor compliance. You can check the report of the press release here.
Last year, there was a notification from Ministry of Education addressed to all education departments with details of registration, though It was not addressed to private institutions.
